Stay fit: 1970s Campaign Sign

The so-called “Trimm-Dich” Campaign of the 1970s aimed at improving public health through the promotion of exercise. Communities designed special paths with exercise stops in local parks. By the 1980s, there were apparently more than 1,500 of these exercise trails. Very few elements remain today. This stone marker features the iconic mascot “Trimmy” jumping leapfrogs (Bockspringen). Intentionally, Trimmy resembled a skinny office employee, not a muscular superhero. The exercise instruments have long disappeared, and this sign, although vandalized and mutilated, gives us a glimpse into this well-advertised public health drive of the past.
